Children of Divorce Suffer Academic Social and Emotional Setbacks

According to the study, children of divorce have a greater likelihood of grappling with anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, and sadness. Sleep deprivation seemingly linked with kids who bully

School kids who experience sleep-disordered breathing or daytime sleepiness are twice as likely to become bullies, according to a study.

“What this study does is raise the possibility that poor sleep, from whatever cause, can indeed play into bullying or other aggressive behaviours,” says Louise O’Brien, who led the study at the University of Michigan Medical School.

HOPE OF A PILL THAT WILL BEAT MIGRAINE

The anatomy of migraine – a close look at the neurobiology of the disease – focuses on the thalamus, the area of the brain that is involved in sensory perception and regulation of motor functions, in one a major session of the 53rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society meeting here this week.A pill to prevent migraine headaches could soon be on the horizon, now that a gene linked to the condition has been discovered.

So far, there is no therapy that prevents an attack.

“We may be moving toward developing about a pill that would block the brain’s pain channel that reacts to stimulation and causes pain in migraine,” says Dr. Guy A. Rouleau director of the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center and Full Professor in the Department of Medicine of the Université de Montréal.

Spiders adorn webs

A new study has suggested that spiders build intricate patterns into their webs to protect them from damage.

The delicate web decorations spun by some orb-weaving spiders is nothing new, but why they do so is unclear. Now a new study has suggested that creatures use decorations to protect their webs from damage. A team from the University of Melbourne found that orb-weaving spiders respond to severe damage to their webs by building bigger silk crosses, but if the damage is mild they don’t bother to add decoration.

Mark Elgar, who led the research, said web damage is costly for spiders as a lot of nutritional resources are required to rebuild a web. “So they evolved this ingenious way to minimise unwanted damage,” he said.

Why HTC Android Phones Are Stingy On Internal Memory

If you’ve ever owned an HTC Android smartphone, you’ll know that HTC is pretty tight-fisted when it comes to internal storage, especially when compared with similarly specced phones from manufacturers such as Motorola and Samsung. What gives? The HTC Desire Android 2.3 update will not meet its end of May deadline, according to 3 Mobile.

For example, while the incoming Motorola Atrix and Samsung’s Galaxy S II both come with a standard 16 gigs of storage, the recently launched Desire S and Incredible S come with just 1.1GB of internal memory. Although you can increase storage capacity with an SD card, there are still many apps that need to be installed on internal memory to function properly, including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter. Widgets – one of Android’s defining features – also don’t work on the SD card.

Every technology era has its four horsemen driving growth and innovation. In the 1990s it was Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, and Dell. Today, there is anew “gang of four,” as Google chairman Eric Schmidt puts it. They are Google (of course), Apple, Amazon and Facebook, and they are behind the consumer revolution on the Internet today. Not only are all four companies “growing at incredible rates.”

3G phones less harmful

Mobile phones and computers with wireless internet connections pose a risk to human health and should be immediately banned in schools, a powerful European body has ruled. A Council Of Europe committee examined evidence that the technologies have “potentially harmful” effects on humans, and concluded that immediate action was required to protect children, the Daily Telegraph reported.

In its report, the committee said it was crucial to avoid repeating the mistakes made when health officials were slow to recognise the dangers of asbestos, smoking, and lead in petrol.
