Nokia 808 PureView 41-megapixel sensor with highest performance

Forty one megapixels. That's what it says on the back of the Nokia PureView 808, a new smartphone that can safely be called the highest resolution cameraphone ever. I got some time with it this morning and it's impressive, but perplexing.
The 808 is a solid block of white plastic. It isn't slim, but c'mon guys, it's 41 megapixels. More importantly, it feels like a premium device, without loose or creaky bits. There's an HDMI port on top, a dedicated camera button, and of course that camera on the back: a relatively large lens with a big Xenon flash above it. The phone has a 4-inch, 640-by-360 touch screen–that's a standard Symbian resolution–as well as a 1.3GHz processor and 16GB of memory, plus a memory card slot............

Apple iPad 3: Home Button Missing

Eagle-eyed readers have been pointing out a curious omission on the imagery of Apple's iPad-themed invite that went out this morning: there's no home button in sight. The simplest explanation here is that it's a photo of (what is presumably) an iPad 2 on its side, something that's not that much of a stretch given that the iPad's been designed to work the same no matter which end is down.
Yet it's also curious given rumors of Apple ditching the home button on the iPad, an option that came to light when the company introduced multi-touch gestures to developers in iOS 4.3, and later as a feature for users in iOS 5. One of those is a full hand pinch that brings users back to the iPad's home screen, just like what would happen if you clicked on the home button...............

APIC Corporation: successfully created a germanium laser

APIC Corp. (Culver City, Calif.), a supplier of photonic ICs to the U.S. military, has announced that a research team under the leadership of APIC chairman and CEO Birendra "Raj" Dutt, has succeeded in getting germanium to act as a laser.
This opens up the prospect of using germanium as an on-chip light source for a future generation of silicon-based photonic ICs, the company said. Allowing circuits to use light instead of electrons could result in higher performance ICs that consume less power, the company added.
The team succeeded in making germanium produce a laser when electrically pumped. Using this technology, called FLIP (Fully Laser Integrated Photonics), APIC hopes to develop photonic microprocessors, doping germanium in silicon wafer. Photons from the induced germanium laser..............

New BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 now is available

When we took a look at the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 OS back at CES, we called it "the most polished version of the PlayBook OS yet." Whether that's enough to turn sales around for the tablet is quite another matter, but it does show that RIM is able to push out new versions of the OS that is going to eventually form the basis of BlackBerry 10.
The biggest improvement? The made-in-Ottawa PlayBook 2.0 operating system (OS), finally features one-click access to all of a user's email accounts. In the previous version of the software that arrived with the debut of the PlayBook in April 2011, users could access email only over the tablet's built-in web browser, a task many critics labelled as the device's ultimate Achilles heel.....................

Google had bypassed user privacy settings

Google does not honor a default privacy setting in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 Web browser, but instead uses a trick to get around it.
Last Friday, a Wall Street Journal report revealed that Google and some advertising companies had been circumventing privacy settings in order to follow users browsing through the Safari browsing on the iPhone and on the Web. Now, Microsoft has said that Google is working around the privacy settings on its browser, Internet Explorer, as well.
In a blog post written by Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Internet Explorer, the software giant alleges that Google is using similar methods — though the actual bypass mechanism is different — to get around default privacy protections in Internet Explorer and................

Bing and Google have weighed in on the amazing rise in less than a month of the Spreading Romney site to the first page of their results for a search on “romney.” For Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, Michigan may be their political Gettysburg. If Romney loses in his native state, where his father was governor, it would be a defeat from which he might not recover.
The makeup of the Republican electorate, which is likely to be one-third Catholic and opposed to abortion, will help Santorum offset the allegiance Romney draws from supporters who delivered his 2008 presidential primary win over John McCain.

To make a payment, a user writes a cheque from the book with a digital pen that captures the transaction details and transmits them to the payee’s bank account, leaving the user with a physical cheque they can use as they wish.
Now a team of academics has developed a system which has the benefits of easy, electronic money transfer while preserving the physical attributes of something that is handed to the payee............

India: ViewSonic launches 10 inch tab for Rs 17,000

Global display and mobile device manufacturer, Viewsonic has announced the launch of a new 10 inch tablet for the Indian market. Named as ViewPad 10s, the tab features a 10.1 inch display and comes loaded with features but still remains in the budget friendly range with a price tag of Rs 17,000 approximately.
ViewSonic is pitching the ViewPad 10e as sitting between the Kindle Fire and iPad 2. There's quite a lot of territory in that space, but what's clear is that ViewSonic doesn't see this tablet as a fast gaming device — more as a web browsing, e-reader kind of tablet.
That's fine as a market position, but we're not so sure the ViewPad 10e really has what it takes to satisfy it in the long term. It certainly looks OK.............

Google Bouncer - Android Market's Security Force Against Malware, Spyware and Trojans

Google  last week announced it's beefed up security at the Android Market with a malware sniffing system called "Bouncer."

Bouncer is an automated system to detect malware. It scans your downloads from the Android Market applications, and already in its program.
Google Bouncer can be considered the security force of the Android Market, an invisible service that will constantly look for malware applications, delete them and block their developers. It was not a secret anymore that malicious software was becoming quite a frightening issue............

Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 8

The next big iteration of its Windows Phone platform appears to address many of the early concerns and brings it to par with competing platforms. Microsoft is still fighting an uphill battle in getting its phones--which have been critically praised--into the hands of consumers. So far, consumers have by far favored Android smartphones and the iPhone.Windows Phone 8 will support multicore processors and native BitLocker encryption, and integrate in many ways with the upcoming Windows 8.
Pocketnow paraphrases Belfiore as saying that Windows Phone 8 will “use many of the same components of Windows 8” and that areas of heavy overlap include “kernel, networking stacks, security and multimedia support.” Developers will apparently have the ability to reuse massive chunks of code when “porting an app from desktop to phone.”...........

Netflix App On Facebook (Video-Rental Privacy Curbs)

The Video Privacy Protection Act was passed in 1988 after the Washington City Paper published a list of recent video rentals by Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork during his contentious nomination process. Although his rental history was mostly innocuous, members of Congress were outraged at the breach of privacy. The law bans sharing of rental information without written consent by the consumer or a warrant from the police.
Netflix argues the law should be amended to allow users to opt in to automatically share their viewing habits on social networks. Users can already share on Facebook which songs they listen to and articles they read.............

Scientists could soon be able to eavesdrop on the constant, internal monologs that run through people's minds, or hear the imagined speech of those patients who cannot speak, a new study has revealed.
