Sleeping sickness, also known as the human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is not something that first world countries are overly familiar with, but for those who live in tropical climates, it is known as a damaging and potentially fatal disease if left untreated.
Definition of the disease
Human African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a vector-borne parasitic disease. The parasites concerned are protozoa belonging to the Trypanosoma genus. They are transmitted to humans by tsetse fly (Glossinagenus) bites which have acquired their infection from human beings or from animals harbouring the human pathogenic parasites.
