'Leap second' 1 July to keep in step with slowing globe

The ever-so-slight slowing of Earth's rotation means a leap second must be added to our clocks every few years to keep atomic clocks in sync with Earth, shown here in an image taken by the Apollo 8 astronauts in December 1968.
Leap second was added to the International Atomic Time clocks to help the Earth catch up from slowing down. Earth has started to slightly slow down at a non-uniform rate, possibly from the molten core, the rolling of the oceans, the melting of polar ice and the effects of solar and lunar gravity.
the world's official timekeepers will add a leap second for the first time in 3½ years..................

Nexus Q specs, price, and availability

One of Google's surprises yesterday was the Nexus Q media streamer, a product that sees the company expanding into the living room with its own branded hardware. The Nexus Q differs from competing devices in that it only serves as a conduit. It has no UI of its own; you control the Q with your Android smartphone or tablet, and the sphere then streams audio and video content down from the Google Play Store (it can also be used to route YouTube content to your television). We spent some time with the device today, and while there are some nice stylistic touches, we did find the device to be somewhat lacking in its feature set and ease of use.
The Q comes in a two-piece cardboard box, packed with a thin instruction pamphlet and a power cable. The device itself is smaller than you..............

McAfee: Sneaky teens, What they're really up to online

Doing some Web searches you want to keep extra private? Try private browsing, Do Not Track, and other tools.
A reader commenting on a Q&A about the rise in behavioral tracking for targeted advertisingasked a great question: How does one browse sensitive subjects without being tracked via cookies?
For most Web activities, many people won't be bothered that they are served up ads for cars or even acne cream if they have been reading news about the newest Tesla or visiting dermatology Web sites. But what about when someone is researching a hereditary or embarrassing medical condition that one would not want revealed to advertisers, shoulder surfers or, worse yet, insurance companies?............

HTC Desire C launched in India for Rs.14,999

The HTC Desire C may be the end of an era for low-end handsets from the Taiwanese firm, as it has recently come out and said that it's not doing "cheap, cheap phones" anymore.
Perhaps slightly confusingly named for those who are aware of HTC's back catalogue of handsets, the Desire C actually usurps the Wildfire S at the bottom of range – instead of filling the higher-end remit of the Desire handsets of old.
As the Desire C does prop up the rest of HTC's handset range it's no surprise that it can be picked up from £130 (around $200) on PAYG, or for free on contracts starting at £13 per month for two years..........

If you are sick and tired of your internet service provider frequently blocking some popular websites, you can relax now. The Madras high court has ruled that its April 25 order against internet piracy should not be used to block the entire website; only specific web links should be blocked.
On an appeal filed by a group of internet service providers, the court in a June 15 order clarified that the content owners should give ISPs the specific web links through which the copyrighted material was being shared so that the ISPs could block them. Following the HC order, most of the websites blocked by ISPs, except Piratebay, have become accessible again..............

Despite the company having a strong bring your own device

Businesses must accommodate demanding tech-savvy employees who want to bring their own devices (BYOD) to work, or risk having a sub-standard workforce, says Marc Randall, senior vice president and general manager at Avaya Networking.
"If you don't embrace BYOD, you're not going to be able to attract employees. If you're too restrictive, it won't be the number one reason they leave, but they will leave because they feel you're not innovative enough. And without BYOD (and mobility), the organisation won't be productive enough and then you will be letting people go."
As a networking vendor Randall has an interest in helping companies adopt BYOD, but according to a recent Gartner report, the trend is real............

E3 – Splinter Cell: Blacklist surprises at Microsoft's press conference‎

Microsoft and Sony packed their E3 press conferences with fountains of blood and shotgun blasts to the head. Maybe that's what it takes to sell games -- but sales figures say it's not working.Blacklist trailer was a mano-a mano murder fest (you need to enter your age just to watch it online), featuring multiple headshots that were helpfully slowed down, Matrix-style, so you could really see the brains go flying. Plus, carotid-slashing, garroting, and skull bashing, all in amazing new pseudo-realistic style. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was roughly as you might expect, horrors of war-wise; and the protracted "Tomb Raider" trailer, while admittedly mesmerizing, bashed around a vulnerable, prequel-era Lara Croft to such a degree that you kind of wanted to cry...........

Facebook App Center Launches With Over 600 Facebook

Facebook has unveiled App Center today, an "App Store" for iOS and Android that features both native and web apps that utilize Facebook integration in some way. The App Center features (only) 600 apps, and Facebook will offer personalized recommendations, presumably based on its social knowledge of each user. App Center will be featured prominently in the mobile on iOS and Android, Facebook's full dekstop site, and on Facebook's mobile site.
Facebook points out that it drives traffic to apps, pushing users to the iOS app store 83 million times in May. In that sense, it's not proper to think of the App Center as a direct competitor to traditional app stores. With only 600 apps, the App Center is hardly a comprehensive listing of...........

Sony Waterproof Handycam HDR-GW77VE

Waterproof camcorders have traditionally been popular in the pool but less compelling on land, given the somewhat-cumbersome designs, so-so image quality and form-factors that aren't necessarily more comfortable than a similarly equipped smartphone. This may describe nearly every pocket cam you've considered, but not Sony's new Handycam -- instead, think of the HDR-GW77V as a high-end camcorder you'll want to use everywhere, that happens to be just as rugged as it is practical. The camera packs the standard ruggedized punch, with a waterproof rating to 16 feet, the ability to survive a five-foot drop and a dustproof housing (though that's typically a given for tightly-sealed cams). You wouldn't think to take still photos with your camcorder, but Sony wants you to just that -- to the tune of 20.4 megapixels. The Handycam's 10x optical zoom lens can capture static frames just as easily as motion, with features like optical SteadyShot and Sweep Panorama, though the 1/3.91-inch CMOS.................

How to set up successful blog and how to win online small business

However we all know bloggers who had a very good start, but after some time they do not publish anything anymore. Chances are good that it happened to you in the past. It happened to me for sure, and this is so frustrating! Doing all these efforts and not being persistent enough to reap the rewards…

Social network releases new data shows trending topics tend to change rapidly

What is a Trend?
Twitter Trends are automatically generated by an algorithm that attempts to identify topics that are being talked about more right now than they were previously. The Trends list is designed to help people discover the 'most breaking' breaking news from across the world, in real-time. Twitter users now send more than 95 million Tweets a day, on just about every topic imaginable. We track the volume of terms mentioned on..................

European researchers found a way to help paralyzed rats learn to walk again

Wearing a robotic harness, paralyzed rats have been made to walk again, according to a new study—albeit with an oddly upright, humanlike gait and while stimulated by judicious jolts of electricity and chemicals.
It's the first time severely injured spinal cords have been reawakened, say researchers, who add that the technique might hold some promise for disabled people.
A five-year study out of the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology demonstrates that a simple chemical cocktail can revive the "innate intelligence" of the spinal column in rats...............

Samsung Galaxy S III Available From Five U.S. Carriers in June

Samsung means business. The consumer electronics giant has just announced sales of its Samsung Galaxy S III flagship Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone for five U.S. carriers starting in June.
Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular will all receive variations of the Galaxy S III this month, but Samsung isn't sharing the exact pricing and release date for each carrier just yet. What we do know is that $200 is the lowest price of the bunch.
What's incredibly interesting (and what CNET had predicted) is that the U.S.-based version, like its HTC One X rival, will carry a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor as opposed to the 1.4GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor that's used in the global release..............

E3 2012: Wii U GamePad revealed by Nintendo

Yesterday during a streaming video conference, Nintendo detailed the final version of the Wii U controller, which it is calling the Wii U Gamepad. Nintendo has made some notable tweaks and revisions to the prototype version detailed last year at E3, adding a new NFC reader and writer, motion and gyroscope sensors, and fully-independent infrared TV remote functionality. The thumbsliders have been replaced by analog thumbsticks, which now support L3 and R3 inward depressions. Nintendo has also made adjustments to the controller's ergonomics and dimensions, adding new handgrips on the bottom, making the Gamepad wider, and adjusting the button layout. The Wii U Gamepad and the Wii U console were shown in both black and white variations, though its unclear if the company will offer other color selections as well...........
