'Anonymous' says it won't shut down internet on Saturday

Will the hacker group Anonymous make good on its threat to take down the Internet Saturday? Probably not. But it could slow it down, according to a number of security experts. And it may depend in part on how unified Anonymous is about the attack -- there are some indications of divisions within the group.
Anonymous has threatened retaliation for the arrests of about 25 of its members last month, and is also focused on what its members believe is a continuing threat by Congress to censor the Internet through revised versions of the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and the companion Senate bill called the Protect IP Act (PIPA), even though the legislation was put on hold in January.............

Google releases Android 4.0.4 update for Nexus, Xoom

We do know that many computer enthusiasts these days have their own custom PC chassis, and many of the newer computer cases do come with a clear acrylic panel on the side for you to peer within. Fancy a new smartphone in the future that is fully transparent? I guess it would evoke a sense of wonder that is similar to the transparent Game Boy that was rolled out by Nintendo all those years ago. Rice University chemist James Tour has come up with a transparent, flexible memory that relies on silicon oxide as the active component in order for it to achieve such a quality. According to Tour, this particularly new type of memory will be able to merge with the likes of transparent electrodes that were developed at Rice University, paving the way for flexible touchscreens as well as transparent integrated circuits and batteries.
Rice University chemist James Tour revealed that the new type of memory could combine with the likes of transparent electrodes developed at.................

Apple: Third-generation iPad is the best iPad ever released

The third-generation iPad is the best iPad ever released, and it's also the best overall tablet currently on the market. But is that really saying much?
Before the new iPad, the iPad 2 was our top choice among tablets, and since Apple's iPad first arrived in 2010, the product line has defined what a modern tablet should be -- a full multi-touch display up front, speedy performance, tablet-specific apps and video, music and games just a tap (and a credit card purchase) away.
The new iPad simply continues the evolution of Apple's tablet with slightly better specs all around, but the user experience of the new device is.....................

Marriage law: Marriage equality and the civil rights inheritance

The government's move to make divorce a quicker process has been largely welcomed as a long overdue step though some women activists and lawyers have voiced doubts over doing away with the six month cooling off period.
The common strain among the women was that law should move along with changing times and there should not be any mechanical import of western ideas. The case eventually went to the US supreme court, which, in 1967, ruled in favour of the Lovings:
"I welcome it. Divorce should be made easier and the laws should keep pace with the changing times," Rekha Palli, a Supreme Court lawyer, told IANS................

AT&T Over T-Mobile Job Cuts

In the follow-up to Thursday’s announcement from T-Mobile USA that it would be laying off 1,900 people from its call centers, senior AT&T executive Jim Cicconi took the chance to return fire on the Federal Communications Commission. Pegging the layoffs on what could be viewed as the agency’s obstruction of last year’s proposed merger with T-Mobile USA, Cicconi alleged that the lost jobs could have been saved had the merger been approved.
Cicconi, the senior executive vice president of external and legislative affairs at AT&T, took to the company’s blog to rebuke the FCC, writing, “So what’s the lesson here? For one thing, it’s a reminder of why ‘regulatory humility’ should be more than a slogan.”.............

Data theft: Hacktivists Stole More Data than Criminals in 2011

We may have heard alot about hacktivists such as Anonymous last year, but in reality, they accounted for a small number of data breaches in 2011, Verizon said in its long-awaited data breach report.
Even so, hacktivists caused a lot of damage, as they were responsible for more than half of data stolen from companies in 2011, Verizon said in its 2012 Data Breach Investigations Report, released Mar. 22. Despite stealing 58 percent of all the compromised data, hacktivists caused only 3 percent of data breach incidents, Verizon found. Cyber-criminals continued to be the biggest threat, with 83 percent of data breaches. Insider threat, such as disgruntled and former employees, was also prevalent..................

Speed Test: New iPad vs. iPad 2

We all know who's going to win in an iPad versus iPad 2 drop test gravity, of course. But which generation holds up better in a face-to-sidewalk meeting?
With a stack of iPads old and new, the good folks at SquareTrade happily took on this question. They dropped the new iPad and its older sister, iPad 2, from several different heights with the screens facing up and facing down.
In the drop from waist level face up, the iPad 2, you see from the real-time and slow-motion replay, survives intact, despite a good thud.
Its second drop is face down. You can hear someone in the background giving an audible wince upon impact. The "oooo" is justified. ................

Unseen Titanic

At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, the “unsinkable” R.M.S. Titanic disappeared beneath the waves, taking with her 1,500 souls. One hundred years later, new technologies have revealed the most complete—and most intimate—images of the famous wreck. The RMS Titanic sank to the very depths of the Atlantic Ocean almost a hundred years ago while on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. But the fascination — and myths — associated with the iconic ship are still with us.
However, it was only through the eyes of Frank Browne that the world learned the true story of the Titanic.
A student of theology who later was to be ordained a Roman Catholic priest, Browne had been sent a ticket for the first leg of the maiden voyage.............

Privacy: Mobile apps lift new concerns

Smartphone in hand, you tap into your local application store. You click on a nifty tool that promises to massage your belly and pat your head at the same time. But just as you're about to download it, you decide to click on that little Terms of Service icon. And you're hit with a phone-book-sized data dump of not-so-fine fine print.
On top of all the privacy battles already under way across the Internet, the boom in mobile apps has ramped things up even more, with waves of service terms and security policies at every new download.
You're damned if you read it, because most of it was written by lawyers and makes little sense to you, and possibly damned if you don't, because...............

Apple's new iPhone coming in second quarter

Currently, the iPhone models of Apple has 3.5 inch screens. The upcoming version of Apple's iconic iPhone will have a 4.6 inch display, according to a report. Currently all the versions of Apple iPhone have 3.5 inch displays.
Reuters is reporting that a South Korean newspaper, Maeil Business, has got an “unnamed industry source” telling them that the next iPhone will come with a large 4.6-inch display, much like the one you’d find on the latest ‘Google phone’, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Yes, it’ll tout a Retina Display and yes, this will be the iPhone 5. But while it’s believable that the next iPhone will feature a larger screen than the current one, a 4.6-inch Retina Display is just way too far-fetched. We’re flagging this one as “Bullshit, bruddah!”.............

Free apps: behind short battery life of cell phones

Paid applications may probably help your mobile phone battery last longer as almost 75 percent of the energy consumed by free versions of apps is exhausted serving up ads or tracking and uploading user information, a new study including Indian origin researcher has revealed.
According to Abhinav Pathak, a computer scientist at Purdue University, Indiana, and colleagues, running only one Android app could eat up your battery in nearly 90 minutes.
Research by Abhinav Pathak on free Android apps shows that up to 75% of the energy that they consume is purely used to show ads. As an example, Only 20% of the battery drain from playing Angry Birds actually comes from playing the game and running the screen. The other 80% is split between finding the user’s location and another 28% is used up uploading the data to the internet. The remainder is mostly miscellaneous..............

New iPad Jailbroken on Launch Day

Within a matter of hours, three methods of jailbreaking the new iPad were unveiled in record time. Only a matter of hours after the release of the new iPad, declarations of successful first steps in jailbreaking it were already sounding off. Fortunately for the new owners of the new iPad, three methods of jailbreaking have cropped up, and now it’s only a matter of time before a downloadable jailbreak is available to the public.

The easiest way to make computer passwords unnecessary

Last time we caught up with our team of geeks-in-residence, our discussion about wireless network security ended with an obvious step: the importance of selecting good passwords.
But despite all the preaching by information technology professionals, even power users don’t often follow habits that can help keep systems safe. According to IT firm Trustwave’s 2012 Global Security Report, released last month, weak passwords were responsible for 80 percent of the security breaches the study examined at both small and large organizations.

Budget 2012: mobiles & laptops to cost, tax slabs, Impact on IT

The Union Budget 2012-13 evoked mixed response from various sections of the society in the region even as people remained glued to TV sets on Friday. While the tax proposals in general drew flak from the people, the focus on infrastructural reforms received support.
Terming the budget as disappointing, president of Ramnagar Industrial Association RK Choudhary minced no words in giving instant reactions while talking to TOI on Friday. Any package or incentive for UP was missing and the budget in general was very disappointing for small-scale and medium industries, particularly in east UP region, he claimed. "The hike in service tax and excise duties is only going to pop up inflation, giving no respite to common man. I was surprised that while Vidarbha got special package of Rs 300 crore and north east also attracting package to the tune of Rs 1,000 cr, there was no package for east UP region, which is considered as one of the most backward regions in the country,"................

Knowledge of the monsoon’s past variability remains incomplete

A fundamental shift in the Indian monsoon has occurred over the last few millennia, from a steady humid monsoon that favored lush vegetation to extended periods of drought, reports a new study led by researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The study has implications for our understanding of the monsoon’s response to climate change.
The Indian peninsula sustains over a billion people, yet it lies at the same latitude as the Sahara Desert. Without a monsoon, most of India would be dry and uninhabitable. The ability to predict the timing and amount of the next year’s monsoon is vital, yet even our knowledge of the monsoon’s past variability remains incomplete.............

Google: 7-inch Nexus tablet in the coming months

Google branded 7-in Nexus tablet to be produced by Asus is expected to retail at a lower price point than the earlier reported $199 to $249, according to Android and Me.
The lower price point suggests the tablet will use a relatively cheaper dual core processor, instead of the previously reported quad-core Tegra 3. It is also being reported that Asus has dropped its $249 MeMo tablet to focus exclusively on the Nexus tablet.
Google's plans for the Nexus Table were first revealed in December 2011 by Google Chairman Eric Schmidt when he told an Italian newspaper that in "next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality."..............

The wait for Instagram is coming to an end pretty soon, according to Instagram’s founders. Apple New iPad vs. the competition

Sales of semiconductors for tablets are expected to surge to $18.2 billion in 2014, up from $2.6 billion in 2010, the year that Apple launched its iPad. By 2014, semiconductor sales for tablets are expected to be exceeded only by mobile handsets, mobile personal computers and desktop PCs, IHS said.

Third-generation device: Apple's new iPad

Apple unveiled the new iPad on Wednesday, bringing with it the much anticipated “Retina” display with a resolution of 2048×1536. Along with the highest PPI value found on a tablet of 264, saturation has also been increased to get the most out of images and video. While that gorgeous display was the star of the show, manufacturing it couldn’t have been easy. Analysts are now claiming that yields aren’t as high as Apple would like, which could lead to display shortages and delays. That, and a reminder that pricing still starts at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, with 4G starting at $629.

SOLAR STORM HITS EARTH!

Airlines and energy suppliers are on alert after an explosion on the surface of the sun led to an enormous magnetic storm which has the power to disrupt power lines, satellite navigation systems and flight paths.
The eruption, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), has led to a "massive amount of solar particles heading towards Earth", which are expected to pass the planet, a spokesman for the Met Office said.
A big solar flare and possibly clear skies over Western Washington could give residents an eyeful of northern lights after midnight tonight and again Thursday evening. The eruption on the sun is the  largest since December 2006, said Joe Kunches, a spokesman and space scientist at.............

Nokia 808 PureView with 41 MP camera at around Rs 30,000

The most talked about handset at this year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona was undoubtedly the Nokia 808 PureView. This handset even managed to overshadow the quad-core beasts that rolled out from stables such as HTC and LG making one believe that camera optics can possibly dethrone speedy processors. At the time of the unveiling at MWC, Jo Harlow, Executive Vice President of Nokia Smart Devices, said, “Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you us. People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell.” However, that is not the only aspect of this handset people are focusing on. Another point of concern for some is that it runs on a Symbian operating system as opposed to the Windows Phone platform that is being used by Nokia in recent..............

Firefox add-on shows who's tracking you online

For the most part, the ad networks and analytics companies and other online trackers that watch as you plod across the Internet are silent sentinels. Sure, they get debated on Capitol Hill and in magazine articles, but it’s pretty easy to forget about them. They’re distant, abstract, like the Greek debt crisis or loose nukes in Russia. We know we should care, but who has the time?
Do Not Track is a step toward putting you in control of the way your information is collected and used online. Do Not Track is a feature in Firefox that allows you to let a website know you would like to opt-out of third-party tracking for purposes including behavioral advertising. It does this by transmitting a Do Not Track HTTP header every time your data is requested from the Web...........

Microsoft Metro Mouse reasonable price of $19.95

Rumors from Russia show the existence of a new Microsoft product that goes by the name of Metro Mouse. This “ghost” rodent hasn’t yet been seen, and neither has it been confirmed by Microsoft. It seems that Microsoft’s new mouse will feature the new Microsoft BlueTrack technology.
What Is Metro? Microsoft’s Signature UI Explained
From a personal point of view, I’m a big fan of Metro on the Windows Phone. It is fast, slick, functional and logical and it has been instrumental in turning Microsoft’s mobile fortunes around. Additionally it has provided the mobile industry as a whole, a much-needed kick in the rear to pull it out of the mire of iOS cloning into which it was readily sinking.............

Why computer security industry never keep data secure

Every year, security vendors gather at the RSA conference here to reaffirm their commitment to fencing out hackers and keeping data safe. And every year, corporate and government Web sites continue to fall victim to basic attacks. Heck, ubersecurity firm RSA itself wascompromised not that long ago, as was digital certificate heavyweight VeriSign, even if it didn't admit it for two years.
In other words, very little changes from year to year beyond the buzzwords du jour bruited about by security vendors. "It's Groundhog Day," says Josh Corman, director of security intelligence at Akamai.
"It's pretty discouraging," said Gregory Roll, who came for advice and to consider buying security software for his employer, a large bank which..................

iOS new security lets apps grab user photos

An iOS security feature that lets users share information about their location can also be a conduit for those applications to surreptitiously grab user photos, according to a new report.
The New York Times' Bits blog today details how developers can gain access to a user's entire photo library through the same user dialog window that requests access to a user's current location. When users click the OK button, the report says, the developer can then copy photos--complete with GPS metadata--to a remote server, without alerting users to the fact.
Before wrapping your iPhone in tinfoil and throwing it into a fire, know that Bits says it's "unclear" if any apps that have been published to the..............

Hackers defaced the website for the Florida-based GEO Group

Anonymous continued its ongoing attack on agricultural biotech giant Monsanto today by publishing an outdated database of the company's material. This is the newest in a barrage of strikes from hackers aligned with Anonymous who operate under the "AntiSec" banner.
The website went down briefly on Tuesday as supporters of Anonymous made online claims that it had been targeted following the arrests in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Spain. It was quickly back up and running but was loading slowly.
Hackers aligned with the Anonymous group of online activists defaced today the Web site of a major contractor operating detention facilities, calling the move a protest of the for-profit prison system, which, they said, benefits from stricter laws and more arrests...............

ASUS launched Transformer Prime, Perfect for business trip

The latest tablet from Asus is really good to look at but the cost might bog down its sales chart. Asus on Thursday launched its Transformer Prime tablet in India. And unlike elsewhere, only one version of the tablet will be available in India, with WiFi, 64 GB storage and a keyboard dock (it is not optional). It is the costliest tablet in the Indian market right now at Rs 49,999. The tablet comes with Android 3.2 but the upgrade to Android 4.0 is already available.
The tablet is really sleek at just 8.3 mm thickness and even with the keyboard dock attached, it is quite slim. The metal finish all around has fingerprint resistant nano coating. Govt allows PSUs companies to buy back shares ‎

The Union Cabinet will on Thursday for the second time consider a proposal to allow cash-rich PSUs to buyback shares and acquire stakes in other state-run firms. It will also look at permitting financial institutions to buy the Centre's stake in companies through bulk sales, as the government searches for options to partially meet its disinvestment target and rein in fiscal deficit.
The Cabinet had considered a similar proposal in January but could not arrive at a decision as some ministries had opposed the move. Some state-run companies had..............
