but in reality, they accounted for a small number of data breaches in
2011, Verizon said in its long-awaited data breach report.
Even so, hacktivists caused a lot of damage, as they were responsible for more than half of data stolen from companies in 2011, Verizon said in its 2012 Data Breach Investigations Report, released Mar. 22. Despite stealing 58 percent of all the compromised data, hacktivists caused only 3 percent of data breach incidents, Verizon found.
