You're happily browsing your favourite sites using O2′s network

If you're browsing the web on your phone or tablet on O2 UK, then the network could be exposing your phone number to every website you visit. O2 customer Lewis Peckover recently discovered that when you're browsing over 3G on O2, your handset's phone number is often included in the HTTP headers sent to each website you visit, in plain text.
HTTP headers are information exchanged between your browser and the web server before a page is loaded. In theory, the way O2 includes your phone number -- alongside more mundane information like your IP address, browser and OS -- means that any website you visit could easily find out your number. It's worth pointing out that the header used by O2 to send phone numbers -- "x-up-calling-line-id" -- isn't one that's routinely logged by web servers. However, just a couple of lines of code would allow a malicious server to find your phone number just by having.......

DEVELOPERS HAVE PUT INTO SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSING APPS

Photographs are a way of preserving a moment in our lives for the rest of our lives. Many of us have at least been tempted at the flashy array of photo printers which seemingly leap off the shelves at even the least tech-savvy. It surely seems old fashioned to talk about 35mm film and non-digital cameras in today’s day and age. To our children, cameras not so feature rich with LCD screens and built in Wi-Fi is as foreign as Atari. However, the innovation of home photo printing is bringing about a new way of preserving our most precious memories. Not only do we have digital copies to keep with us for the rest of our days across hundreds of different archives, thanks to printer manufacturers such as Epson, Hewlett Packard, and Canon, we now have the ability to fill our photo albums, right from the comfort of our living rooms.............

Microsoft is switching to the Resilient File System for Windows 8

ReFS is built on the foundation of the current and almost 20-year-old NTFS file system. But it's been designed from the ground floor to offer several advantages, particularly for servers.
As described in the latest Building Windows 8 blog by Surendra Verma, a development manager on Microsoft's Storage and File System team, ReFS will be unveiled and phased in as part of Windows Server 8, so IT administrators will be able to give it a spin by the end of the year.
Since ReFS uses a subset of features from NTFS, it's designed to maintain backward compatibility with its older counterpart. So Windows 8 clients will be able to read and write to ReFS hard-drive partitions and shares on a server, just as they can now do with those running NTFS. But..................

Traffic: Website Scaling

Web site traffic was initially viewed as an all-important metric for gauging success on the Web. This assumption was due in part to the lack of other business metrics to explain the .com phenomenon. Now much of the focus has shifted back to profitability, and Web site traffic is only part of the equation. A recent example of what not to do would be Target's introduction of a low-priced Missoni collection. The site attracted so much traffic that Target.com was swamped for several hours on Sept. 13, 2011, leading would-be shoppers to face a cute but frustrating site-down page.
Some might argue that having so much traffic that the website went down was actually good for business. Two-part series on website scaling, Its exploring what it means and how to accomplish it. Part 1 discusses the metrics that apply to all websites, clarifies the true meaning of a "concurrent user," and covers the measures you can take to reach full scalability by defining performance-testing basics.................

SanDisk's latest release is a device called the memory vault

One of the big worries when it comes to digital photography is that of permanence.  If your online host goes down or your hard drive crashes, you could lose hundreds or thousands of photographs.
SanDisk's latest release is a device called the memory vault.  It's an external hard drive that's capable of storing your data, completely uncorrupted, for 100 years.  That means that - barring any sort of technological breakthrough that lets us augment ourselves and live forever - your photos will live on longer than you do.
It’s risky to store your entire collection of photos on hard drives, because they’re most prone to failure among all types of storage media................

GTLD Security: new scheme see it potential security nightmare

What's in a gTLD?
IT IS going to be a great opportunity—but whether an opportunity for business innovators or for rent-seekers and scam-merchants depends on whom you ask. On January 12th ICANN, the body that regulates the naming system of computers connected to the internet, starts accepting applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). There are currently just 21 of these (22 if you count .arpa, used only for managing the internet's technical infrastructure), and most are reserved for specific users: .edu for American universities, .aero for air-transport companies, the recently-launched .xxx for pornography purveyors, and so on. Only four—.com, .org, .net and .info—are open to anyone. Website owners with global pretensions often prefer them to country-code TLDs such as .uk, .ru and .cn (though some of those, like Tuvalu's .tv, have become.................

Raw milk: passion or confusion?

We are what we eat; however, something as simple as splashing milk over morning cereal requires navigation through an array of choices — fat and lactose content, probiotics, vitamins A and D, homogenization and pasteurization. Claims that pasteurization decreases the nutritional and health value of milk are promoted by a small, but passionate segment of our society.
From 2000-2008, 50 disease outbreaks in the U.S. were attributed to the consumption of raw milk. In Michigan, outbreaks of food-borne illnesses attributable to raw milk consumption occurred in 2010 and 2011.
The milk is contaminated by adding detergent, fat, soda and urea besides its age-old dilution with water. "It is not a complicated process. Urea is................
