Kids of older parents face risk of autism

It is well known that a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with Down Syndrome increase with age. However, a new study has suggested that men should also consider their biological clocks when planning a family.
Children of older fathers are more likely to be diagnosed with autism, schizophrenia and a number of other neuropsychiatric or developmental disorders, and a new study reveals why this may be.

The results show that older male mice are more likely than younger males to have offspring with mutations in genes that correspond to human genes associated with..........

China urges stop the 'cancer' of online rumours

The Glorious People’s Republic of China is about to be overthrown by tittle tattle, according to its ruling party. China’s state-run news agency demanded ISPs regulators and police do more to cleanse websites of “toxic rumours.”

The Chinese definition of “rumour” is anything which has not been submitted to a Chinese censorship committee, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. The Xinhua news agency’s denunciation of Internet “rumor mongering” comes after a senior party official, Liu Qi, last week urged Sina Corp and other Chinese companies do more to staunch harmful hearsay among the 200 million or more Chinese who use Twitter.

Google+ translation service in chrome

Google+ has catapulted onto the social media scene, with over 25-million users registered at the start of August 2011. Much is being documented about its innovative use of circles, sparks and huddles (which, I might add, sound more like nursery school playgroup names than social media tabs). But what does it mean for business owners?

While it may be a little early to speculate, let’s go ahead and look at some of the potential draw cards.

According to Quirk social media manager, Catherine Scott, social media promises integration of internet technology and your social world. It is about merging online and real life experiences. In today’s world we tend to spend a lot of time online and it’s important that we feel like that time is used effectively.

Feds: Google Boss Knew About Illegal Drugs Ads

The search giant Google, that this blogger remembers as popular new device with Berkeley and Stanford students back in 1999, had one major legal victory and another major legal loss: one regarding thumbnails and the other on an allegedly illegal set of Canadian ads involving Google’s Chief Executive Officer Larry Page.

In the first case, a website firm called “Perfect 10,” which features photos and webcams of scantily-clad women, sued Google for a wronghead reason. Perfect 10 claims that Google AdSense users who obtained photos of women from Google Image Searches that were originally on Perfect 10 were illegally benefiting from that ability, as were Blogger account holders, and so because Google gains revenue from the Google AdWords side of Google AdSense (where AdWord hosts the ads, and Google AdSense places the ads hosted by AdWords).

Anna Hazare : We have won only half the battle

An Indian reform activist agreed Saturday to end an 11-day hunger strike after Parliament expressed nonbinding support for parts of his anti-graft plan, ending a drama that had deeply embarrassed a government plagued by corruption scandals.

The 74-year-old Anna Hazare had demanded sweeping legislation to create a government watchdog, but said Parliament’s move was enough to persuade him to begin eating.

Hazare thanked people for their support on the Lokpal agitation but cautioned that only half the battle had been won.

“We have won only half the battle,” said Hazare standing before wildly cheering crowds and flanked by his key aides and Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Maharashtra chief minister who has been an interlocutor.

Can a man and a woman ever be best friends?

CAN a man and a woman ever be best friends? This is one pertinent question that keeps popping up over and over again. It was first put out perhaps for public scrutiny in When Harry Met Sally. The hugely popular hit was then followed by My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) and Hum Tum in India (a desi remake of When Harry Met Sally) in 2004.

India’s GenNow got introduced to the question with the Imran Khan-Genelia D’Souza starrer Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa (2009). This year we have Friends With Benefits claiming friendship is a four- letter word. In short, they say a man and a woman can never be friends — as for being best friends, that’s a distant dream.

Does the single life mean an earlier death?

It’s great being single, isn’t it? You get to sleep on either side of the bed; you never have to wait for the bathroom; you’ve got all that “me time.” Except, well, you may be one of the unlucky singles who keel over about one decade earlier than your married friends, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

MIDDLE-AGED men who reject family life and choose to live alone are more likely to die earlier than their married counterparts, Government figures published yesterday reveal.

They are also significantly more prone than married men to a variety of debilitating illnesses such as diabetes and rheumatism, said the study released by the Office for National Statistics.

Harry Potter's magical time-freezing binoculars

Harry Potter’s magical time-freezing binoculars have made their way into the 21st century, and are set to revolutionize bird watching, horse racing, cricket and even opera. Designers at Sony have invented binoculars that allow users to pause, rewind and play back whatever they are viewing, reports the Daily Mail. Scientists have developed binoculars which they say can allow users to pause, rewind and play back whatever they are viewing, similar to the magical device used by schoolboy wizard in Hollywood flick ‘Harry Potter’.The digital devices – reminiscent of the ‘Omnioculars’ used by Potter to watch his favourite sport of Quidditch – will allow a birdwatcher to record a sighting of a rare species and then send proof to other twitchers within minutes. Google Provides Weather Forecast on Maps

Google is providing current weather information and cloud data from around the world on its Google Maps application, by an arrangement with The Weather Channel’s weather.com and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

The new “weather layer” can be activated through a widget in the upper right corner of Google Maps. Clicking on the weather icon for a particular city opens a window with data like current humidity and wind conditions, as well as a forecast for the next four days, said Jonah Jones, a Google user experience designer.

Users can also change on the left-hand panel the units of wind speed and temperature, and enable or disable the viewing of clouds when zoomed out from the map.

IBM produces first ‘brain chips’

The system is capable of “rewiring” its connections as it encounters new information, similar to the way biological synapses work.

The technology, known as cognitive computing, mimics the brain’s neural and synaptic responses through complex algorithms and silicon circuitry.

The chips – not programmed the same way as traditional computers – are expected to learn from experiences, recognize patterns, remember and learn from mistakes. It is a sharp departure from traditional concepts and computer design, IBM said.

Google Launches Free Music Blog for Music Beta Users

One of the main failings of Google’s new music service, Music Beta, was that it didn’t feature a store — it’s basically a music locker in which to store music that you already own. Well, it seems like Google is starting to take steps toward making the service more discovery-based with the launch of Magnifier, a music blog for users of Google Music Beta.

Google announced the existence of Magnifier via its blog, describing it as “a new music discovery site.” It features interviews with artists and bands, as well as free music you can add to your Music Beta account daily (you need to be a user in order to score the tracks).

Changes to the sign-in pages of Google

After a few months of testing bigger sitelinks, Google launched the new feature. Sitelinks are displayed below some of the results and they’re usually related pages from the same site. “The links (…) are meant to help users navigate your site. Our systems analyze the link structure of your site to find shortcuts that will save users time and allow them to quickly find the information they’re looking for,” explains Google.

Until now, Google displayed up to 8 sitelinks and only included page titles. The updated sitelinks look like regular results, since Google also shows small snippets and their URLs. Google now shows up to 12 expanded sitelinks, but you’ll still see the.....................

Tattoo hope in patient monitoring

Not too long ago, most Americans associated tattoos with sailors, bikers and sideshow artists. But tattoos have become more popular in recent years, and the people who get them are as diverse as the styles and designs they choose. And some people who would never think of tattooing pictures or symbols onto their bodies use permanent makeup — a type of tattoo — to emphasize their eyes and lips.

An “electronic tattoo” could herald a revolution in the way patients are monitored and provide a breakthrough in computer gaming, say US scientists.

They used the device, which is thinner than a human hair, to monitor the heart and................

Sony Launches New 3D Blu-Ray Home Theatre Systems

The rear panel includes three HDMI ports, component, LAN, optical, coaxial and an additional USB port.
This 5.1 channel set has front and rear speakers that measure approximately four feet in height. Like the player, the speakers have a glossy black finish. The centre channel speaker is about a foot in

Google can do more than beef about patents

Google executive that Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT), Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) and other IT industry giants are using patents “as a weapon” to slow the growth of Google’s Android mobile operating system has set off a tit-for-tat row between Google and Microsoft that shows no signs of subsiding.

The squabble has put a spotlight on the increasing use of technology patents by IT vendors to gain and maintain a competitive advantage.

The dispute began Wednesday when David Drummond, Google vice president and chief legal officer, posted a blog entitled “When Patents Attack Android” in which he argued that competitors, led by Microsoft and Apple, have banded together in “a hostile, organized campaign against Android” that’s being “waged through bogus patents.”

ASUS unveils netbook

All laptop computers are a compromise between power and size: the smaller the laptop, the less power it will have. So we wouldn’t expect a netbook to outperform larger, bulkier laptops, or desktop computers.

That said, the ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM is one of the best performing netbooks we tested. Equipped with Intel’s dual-core Atom N550 processor, it achieved an overall performance score of 0.21 in our tests, coming joint first with all the other models that have this processor installed. Its responsiveness was also high, with a score of 0.38, taking it very close to the top.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute of Telecommunications and the Heinrich Heinz Institute in Germany claim they have developed a practical implementation of Visual Light Communication (VLC), achieving an 800Mbps Optical WLAN connection, using flickering LED lights for line-of-sight networking.

While the idea of using LED lights that flicker faster than the human eye can perceive for data transmission purposes it not very new, and has been tried several times before, this particular implementation is practical in that it is fast enough, and reliable enough to be actually used in real world applications, where rooms bear large arrays of white, green, blue and red LED light sources which transmit discrete data over
