Your Desk Job Is Destroying Your Body

Office workers now have the perfect excuse to give up their desk job – sitting down for long periods of time increases your risk of dying.

New Australian research shows that no matter how physically active you are, your chances of dying before your time are increased by sitting for long periods.

And the more you sit, the greater the risk.

Those reporting the highest amount of daily sitting had a 48 per cent increased risk of premature death compared with those who sat for less than four hours a day, the research found.

A study of more than 200,000 men and women in NSW has found the longer people.............

It’s part of the social glue that fosters trust and cooperation in everyday life,” said UC Berkeley social psychologist Robb Willer, a coauthor of the study published in this month’s online issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

NASA: Sunspot 1302 It's big. It's bad. And it's coming our way

A sunspot, 62,000 miles across - so big it would dwarf the Earth - is releasing gigantic solar flares that could in theory wreak havoc with electrical communications ranging from handheld electronics such as iPhones to sections of the power grid.

Nasa has detected two X-class solar eruptions from 1302 – the most extreme possible – in the past week. One that occurred on September 24 produced an amazing light show over England last night – but it’s far from over, as the sunspot isn’t yet directly aligned with Earth.

NASA experts have said ‘anything electrical’ can be affected by such activity.

Known as ‘Active Region 1302’, it is producing bursts of radiation so intense that...........

Research finds: 'Hyper-mutated' prostate cancers

Some prostate cancers evolve at a super-fast rate to become “hypermutated” and resistant to treatment, a study has found.

Scientists made the discovery after mapping the genetic codes of 23 aggressive and drug-resistant cancers.

They identified three tumour types that had 10 times more mutations – altered “letters” in the genetic code – than other advanced prostate cancers.

“We don’t know the cause of these hypermutated tumours, but the frequency of the mutations suggests these tumours might evolve very rapidly to develop resistance to therapies,” said Dr Peter Nelson, one of the study leaders from the Fred Hutchinson...........

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has cleared confusion over its controversial move to restrict SMSes to 100 per day per SIM for all subscribers. Why US cos want to restrict Facebook use

In the age of instant tweets and impulsive Facebook posts, some American companies are still trying to figure out how they can limit what their employees say about work online without running afoul of US law.

Confusion about what American workers can or can’t post has led to a surge of more than 100 complaints at the National Labor Relations Board most within the past year and created uncertainty for businesses about how far their social media policies can go. “Employers are struggling to figure out what the right policies are and what they should do when these cases arise,” said Michael Eastman, labor law policy director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

BBC NewsFacebook: New feature will allow users to know who doesn’t like

There are two things on the Internet that you can almost always count on: Facebook is going to make changes to its layout without really telling its users in advance, and its users are going to spend the next two days blasting the changes on their Facebook updates – and a side group of people are going to blast the blasters for being “overdramatic.”

But instead of just surrendering to the court of nebulous public Facebook opinion on this one, let’s look at the numbers. Specifically, the 1,049 users voting as part of a Sodahead poll that asked them to share their opinion about the changes. Are you sitting down?

No need; It should come as little surprise that 86 percent of those voting gave a big fat “dislike” to Facebook’s new redesign – that’s the design that sticks your “top” news to the top of your Facebook homepage and slaps a real-time “Facebook updates”

Telecom regulator - TRAI seeks info on 3G roaming deals

Telecom regulator TRAI has sought information from leading service providers on their bilateral agreements for 3G roaming to ensure there is no violation of licence terms and conditions.

The watchdog is looking at as to how these companies are selling their 3G spectrum services under the agreement, sources in the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said. Earlier, the Department of Telecom had raised doubts over 3G roaming pacts of companies that do not have pan-India 3G licences.
The pacts help them reduce cost. In July this year, in an effort to reduce cost and offer pan-India 3G services, Vodafone, Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular had started sharing...........

Vast Difference in Effects of Regular Moderate Drinking and Alcohol

A study has found very dramatic differences between the effects of alcohol administered in moderation on a daily basis and the same total weekly amount of alcohol administered on only two days of the week.

In a lab experiment, mice that were given regular moderate amounts of alcohol showed no weight gain, improved lipid values, and much less development of atherosclerosis than did control animals.
However, those given alcohol in a binge-drinking pattern showed worse outcomes than control animals, and much worse outcomes than those given regular moderate doses of alcohol.

The authors examined the effect of daily-moderate (2 drinks/day, 7 days/week) and weekend-binge (7 drinks/day, 2 days/week) patterns of alcohol consumption on..........

Mechanical computers – Boffins step closer to steam-powered Babbage computer

The Science Museum in London has agreed to help by digitising the mathematician’s original plans.

Eventually the images will be used to create a full working model of the Analytical Engine.

Babbage’s many notepads and sketch books are currently held in the Science Museum’s archives, but have never been converted into a form that is easily accessible.

It is hoped that the digital documents will allow researchers around the world to pick apart the many disparate ideas and settle on the definitive version of the machine.

“There are some complete plans, they are just not totally complete. There will be a degree of interpretation,” said John Graham-Cumming, the programm

Electrical stimulation of brain boosts birth of new cells

With the possible exception of those affected by hyperthylmesia – a rare condition where a person has an extraordinary capability to recall events from their past – most of us wouldn’t mind having our memory enhanced. That’s just what appears to have happened to a group of mice when targeted areas of their brains were electrically stimulated. The treatment triggered an increase in the creation of new cells in the hippocampus, with experiment results suggesting the mice’s spatial learning improved. The researchers responsible say the results could have implications for the treatment of memory disorders in humans.

A clinical treatment known as deep brain stimulation (DBS), which delivers electrical pulses to targeted areas of the brain, has been used with some success in the...........

Global Internet giant Google won a court case against Australia’s competition regulator Thursday over claims that sponsored links at the top of its search results were misleading to consumers.

While noting that the word “advertisement” could have been less confusing for Internet users than “sponsored links”, Federal Court judge Antony Nicholas ruled that Google had not breached consumer law in its search presentation.

Google has been cleared of misleading web users in a court case brought by an Australian watchdog that accused the Chocolate Factory of mixing adverts into search results. However, Trading Post – the country’s top online classified ads site – was...............

Online / Offline – Which TERM PLAN will you go for?

There is some good news for all those who would either like to take up a term plan or who are looking to upgrade (increase) their life insurance cover! It is recently disclosed by LIC that Term Plans will be sold online and offline and the premiums will be cheaper than the current rates offered.

LIC would come up with online term plan because of its dependence on agents’ network for selling its products. But this is a good move from LIC as their share of term plan market is eaten away by private insurers from last few years. At the moment, a person has to pay a very high premium for term plan through LIC. For example, the premium for 25 lacs cover with LIC term plan at the moment is around 7,000 – 8,000, whereas it’s around 3,000-3,500 in companies like ICICI iProtect & Kotak e-preferred.

Facebook’s “News Feed” that streams updates from friends will give priority to important posts, images shared at the website will be displayed larger, and a “Ticker” chat column is being added for real-time conversations.

Researchers have shown that the male immune system is less effective at fighting off infections than the female system and that means men feel worse when battling illness than women.

For the study, a team, led by Dr Ramona Scotland at Queen Mary University of London, analysed the immune systems of mice and rats given a host of different infections. They looked at the white blood cells in the lungs and stomach which act as the body’s first line of defence against infection. The male immune system is less effective at fighting off infections than the female system and that means men feel worse when battling illness than women, researchers have shown.

Resentment is growing against the government’s decision to limit the number of SMSes people can send in a day. The regulation announced by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) comes into effect on September 27 and sets the cap at 100 SMSes a day. A number many feel is too low and take away their freedom to decide their own limits.

It will give them a tough time, especially during festive occasions such as Diwali, when people send out several hundred wishes in a day,” says Rajan S Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

Expert- Differences between the brains of men and women

Why do women spend 30 times more time and 25 times more money than men when asked to get a pair of trousers from a showroom in a mall? It’s the brain make-up, says C Edward Coffey, a US-based neuropsychiatrist.

Feeling pain? The computer tell when it hurts?

A team at Stanford University in California used computer learning software to sort through data generated by brain scans and detect when people were in pain.

“The question we were trying to answer was can we use neuroimaging to objectively detect whether a person is in a state of pain or not. The answer was yes,” Dr Sean Mackey of the Stanford University School of Medicine in California, whose study appears in the journal PLoS One.

Currently, doctors rely on patients to tell them whether or not they are in pain. And that is still the gold standard for assessing pain, Mackey said.

But some patients — the very young, the very old, dementia patients or those who are not conscious — cannot say if they are hurting, and that has led to a long search for.............

World’s oldest-living conjoined twins turn 50

Conjoined twins occur in roughly 1 in every 200 identical twin pregnancies and are always identical. Actual numbers for conjoined births vary from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 100,000 pregnancies, and 40-60% are stillborn, with many others dying within the first few days after birth. About 70% of conjoined twins are female, the reason for which is unknown.

Separation has been attempted on almost all conjoined twins born since the 1950s with varying results, although the first successful separation was performed in Basle, Switzerland in 1689 on twin girls born joined by a ligament at the sternum (xiphopagus). The first conjoined twins to be successfully separated in “modern” times are generally believed to be Catherine and Caroline Mouton of Louisiana, born joined at the lower back (pygopagus)and separated in 1953 at 8 days of age. Both survived the operation, but Catherine committed suicide in 1985..........

Birth-control pills can affect women’s memory forever

Ladies, please note – birth control pills affect memory, a new study has warned. Researchers at the University of California have found that women who use contraceptives like birth control pills experience memory changes – in fact, their ability to remember the gist of an emotional event improves, while women not using the contraceptives better retain details.

“What’s most exciting about this study is that it shows use of hormonal contraception alters memory,” researcher Shawn Nielsen said. She stressed that the medications did not damage memory. “It’s a change in the type of information they remember, not a deficit,” she said. In the study, groups of women either on the contraceptive or experiencing natural hormonal cycles were shown photographs of a mother, her son, and a car accident . The audio narrative differed; some in each group were told the ca............
