why do people get cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic or plastic surgery is a procedure that changes certain part of the body based on the patient's desire and satisfaction. Some cosmetic surgery may not require surgical techniques such as cutting and stitching. Non-surgical methods like special lasers are being used nowadays for minor procedures like unwanted hair removal, acne treatments and other age-reduction procedures.

Some cosmetic procedures include making the breasts larger (augmentation mammoplasty) or smaller (reduction mammoplasty), reshaping the nose (rhinoplasty), removing pockets of fat from specific spots on the body (liposuction), and less known calf reduction surgery (A procedure that alters the patient’s thick legs big calves based on what most people considered as an ideal legs shape).

Why do people get cosmetic surgery?
The very reason why people get plastic surgery is self-conscious. Well, people are self-conscious about their bodies. Almost everyone (including you and me) wishes there were a thing or two that could be changed. Most of you may decide that you need a plastic surgery such as rhinoplasty to reshape your nose or calf reduction surgery because you're not happy about the way your calves look. It may sound vanity but everyone has the right to feel good about oneself.

However, cosmetic surgery is unlikely to change your life. It's not going to work that way.

Instead self-consciousness goes away with time. Cosmetic surgery do help to improve your appearance, which can have a whole set of other benefits all on its own, but you probably don't need it. You might consider going to the gym to get in shape through appropriate diet and workout which can do great things for a person's image without resorting to surgery.

As for thick legs big calves, a proper diet and selective exercise such as yoga or Pilates will do great things for you. At first, calf liposuction, botox and calf reduction surgery may seem like quick and easy fixes for the thick legs big calves compared with sticking to a program. But there is risk involve in surgery than anything else. Thus surgery should be the last option when all other options have failed.

Young people should think a lot of times and seek counseling before undergoing calf reduction or any other surgery. A teen's body continues to change through the years. Body parts that might appear too large or too small now can become more proportionate over time. Sometimes, what seems like a big calf looks more the right size as the rest of the person's body catches up during growth. And, what seems like a thick leg for you might looks just the ideal size for others.

Also, a good plastic surgeon will spend a lot of time interviewing young people who are considering plastic surgery to decide if they are good candidates for the surgery. They have to know that patients are emotionally mature enough to go through surgery and that they are doing it for the right reasons.

Emotions are another reason why do people get plastic surgery. Emotions have a really big effect on how people think about their looks. People who are going through depression, extremely self-critical, or have a distorted view of what they really look like sometimes think that changing their looks will solve their problems. They need to resolve whatever emotional issues they have with the help of a trained therapist first. In fact, a good doctor won't perform plastic surgery on people who are depressed or have other mental health disorders.

Cosmetic surgery is a gift of science. It helps in improving the physical appearance and thus helps in enhancing self-image. Nevertheless, this tool should not be used just for the sake of looking beautiful. Also, there should be proper research that should be done before choosing any particular procedure or technique since any procedure, including calf reduction surgery, lower leg liposuction, etc. involves many risks and complications. Your personal physician or a cosmetic specialist is the best person to give advice on this. You need to be clear in your mind as to what you are expecting. Before going through with the surgery, make sure that the surgeon you have chosen is recommended and has a reputation of being honest and safe.

Does plastic surgery make patients feel better? Studies have shown that people report increased satisfaction with the body part they had surgery on, but results are mixed on whether plastic surgery boosts their self-esteem, quality of life, self-confidence and interpersonal relationships in the long term.

How does cosmetic surgery affect those around the recipients? Physically attractive people often receive preferential treatment and are perceived by others as more sociable, dominant, mentally healthy and intelligent than less attractive people, according to research by psychologist Alan Feingold

What effect does plastic surgery have on children and teenagers? In 2004, about 240,682 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients 18 years old or younger, and the top surgical procedures were nose reshaping, breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tucks. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the safety and long-term risks of these procedures on adolescents--an age in which teenagers are still developing mentally and physically, Zuckerman says.

When does changing your appearance qualify as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)? BDD, first introduced in the revised third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1987, is characterized by a preoccupation with an aspect of one's appearance. People with BDD repeatedly change or examine the offending body part to the point that the obsession interferes with other aspects of their life. Several studies show that 7 to 12 percent of plastic surgery patients have some form of BDD. Plus, the majority of BDD patients who have cosmetic surgery do not experience improvement in their BDD symptoms, often asking for multiple procedures on the same or other body features.

  2. Hi all,

There are numerous significant benefits of cosmetic surgery which affect both the physical anatomy and the emotional mind of patients affected with a wide range of body image issues. Cosmetic surgery is a unique specialty within the medical industry, since it is not concerned with disease or injury. Thanks a lot!

  3. Well, I agree that the reason why some people undergo cosmetic surgery is because they are too self-conscious. And I have to agree that it does fade in time. But cosmetic surgery just helps them rid of their self-consciousness, right?
